Entertaining Teaching is Not a Sin January 21, 2008

Teaching is something we’ve seen almost daily from the time we were little. We’ve seen it in Elementary School, Junior high, High school, College, Tech schools, sports, 4-H, Church, Youth Groups, and so many more situations. And most of us at one time or another will find ourselves in a situation where we are teaching others.

But what is teaching? What is the difference between teaching and holding a group prisoner against their desire until you run your voice dry and time expires? We like to justify that teaching is not a form entertainment it is a form of work and therefore if people don’t enjoy it is their own fault. Teaching is instead probably or can be one of the most perfect unions of work and entertainment in this world.

It is neither numbing entertainment, like watching a movie where our brain simply gets to relax and release tension with no real effort on our part. Nor pure work, or at least with the same connotation we place on work. Often work is a negative word as we remember all the times we ‘worked’ because the task simply needed to be finished.

If we look at teaching as work then those listening to us and learning from us will view it as work also. If you are excited and trying to entertain with knowledge and truth then your teaching becomes 10 times more effective. Entertainment is not a bad thing and there is nothing wrong with passing on truth in an entertaining manner, as a matter of fact it makes that truth more memorable meaning your efforts teaching it were not wasted.
